During the next three summers I put 15,000 trouble free miles on the TX, then sold it in late 1976 when I got married. Guess I really wasn't ready to give up my bike... because I kept on looking for another TX750 for years.
In 2002 I finally found the right one... it was a great looking bike located in Westerville, Ohio. I called Jeffrey Holmes, made the deal over the phone, then had the Yamaha shipped to Calais, Maine. Brian Hatt helped me get it home to Canada aboard his Dad's old Chevy pickup.
Cosmetically this bike was/is great, but like any motorcycle that has sat for many years, a lot of work was needed to make it roadworthy. On the plus side, it only had 12,000 miles on it. It was obvious to me the previous owner had taken great care of this bike. It was time to get it running well.
These are the things I have done since I purchased the bike:
- cleaned the old fuel particles and dirt from the gas tank
- added inline fuel filters
- replaced fuel petcocks with NOS units
- cleaned and totally rebuilt carburetors
- cleaned and rebuilt the front brake caliper, replaced front brake pads
- new battery, new Bridgestone Accolade tires, new halogen headlight
- new points, new NGK B7-ES spark plugs
- learned to adjust valves, points, timing, clutch, and carbs
- added deep oil sump plate for additional oil capacity & prevent oil frothing
- replaced oil seals under igniton points cover
- replaced drive chain
- removed engine and replaced leaking head gasket, and other gaskets
- removed engine covers and polished them
- replaced stock oil filter with adapter using BMW R/80 oil filter
- rebuilt air filter cannister using UNI-FLO material
- replaced the defective starter clutch assembly with NOS assembly
- polished the aluminum rims with Mother's Polish
- polished the paint and chrome with EAGLE 1 Nanowax... Great results!!!
- ridden this TX750 an addtional 10,000 miles (16,000 kms)
The journey of restoring this old Yamaha to proper running condition has been a wonderful adventure. I must say, I've learned a lot about motorcycle repairs and maintenance. Other vintage bike enthusiasts have been very kind to me, providing me with tremendous guidance and encouragement. I owe a very special "Thankyou" to my two friends Ola Richard & Mac Hunter for all of their help with this project. In turn, I try to repay these kindnessess by helping other TX750 riders, and as a result, I continue to make good friends from all over the world.
It's taken a long time to achieve my dream of once again owning a rare classic TX750 Yamaha! Many thanks to all of you who have helped make this possible!
